Children who learn to read in the first three years of their education are likely to become fluent readers increasing their ability to be more successful in school programming. At KYCC, our preschool age children are given an academic ‘boost” so they will be ready to learn when they enter the school setting.
In the preschool program our children are instructed in reading and math readiness, English language acquisition, and social/communication skills. They are also fed two healthy meals a day, taught the importance of hand washing and brushing teeth, and given the opportunity to exercise using playground equipment along with organized games such as soccer (called football in Tanzania) and volleyball.
The nutrition and exercise make a significant difference in the overall health of the children. Additionally, they receive medical treatment when sick or injured and, preventatively, receive deworming pills so the nutrients from their meals will be digested. There are currently 40 children in this class.
